Our story

History & Heritage

Bambako's history has mostly lived in memory — passed between elders and children, rarely written down. This page is where that history gets preserved for good, in the words of the people who hold it.

Founding story

Bambako is a Mandinka village in the Kiang Central District of The Gambia, home to a community whose roots trace to the Bambara people of Mali. This section should tell the full founding story in the community's own words — who settled here, when, and why this site on the Gambia River was chosen.

To the association: replace this note with the village's founding story, gathered from elders. Even a few paragraphs, recorded in an interview and transcribed, is enough to start — this can always grow.

In their own words

Oral history archive

Short recordings — audio or video — of elders telling the village's story, in their own words. This is the section future generations will value most, and the one most at risk of being lost if it isn't recorded now.

To the association: even a phone recording of an elder speaking for a few minutes is worth adding here. Over time this becomes an archive no other village document can replace.
